Turkey Tail

Fans of cream turkey tail fungus, banded with rust, brown and cream.

Last year a friend gave us some large wood slices from his woodland garden. They were already colonised with amazing Turkey Tail fungi. Flat creamy fans layer themselves on top of each other. Each fan is ringed with gold, rust, and grey bands – and sometimes even a dusty blue. They get coated in bright green velvety moss too. Close up the surface is obviously slightly furry.
They seem to die off in the warmer weather and return when it is damp.

Apparently Turkey Tail, dried and powdered and incorporated into drinks or food, is very good for you. I haven’t tried it yet, as I am fairly sure I’d get insects, moss, dog hairs, mould and all sorts alongside any that came out of our garden. The dogs don’t seem interested in eating it either.
